From Retro Charm to Social Heart: A North Yorkshire Kitchen Transformation
From Retro Charm to Social Heart: A North Yorkshire Kitchen Transformation

The Before: A Kitchen with Character
When our clients first showed us around, it was easy to see why they had a soft spot for the original kitchen. With its warm ochre tiles, retro patterned accents and classic built-in double oven, it had a genuinely charming, old-timey character.
But charm can only carry a space so far. Behind the nostalgia, the property was suffering from some rising damp, and the layout simply wasn't working anymore. The kitchen was closed off from the rest of the home, short on storage and worktop space, and offered nowhere for people to gather. For a family who love to cook, entertain and spend time together, it had become a room to pass through rather than a place to be.

Back to Brick
The space was stripped right back to brick, providing a blank canvas to properly address the requirements and rethink the footprint from scratch.
The most transformative decision was the extension. By pushing the kitchen out, it opened up the opportunity for the big-ticket features that define the finished room: expansive sliding glass doors onto the garden, a pair of roof lanterns flooding the space with natural light, and room for a generous central island for all the much loved gathering.
Mid-project photos show the bones of the new space coming together:
- Underfloor heating was installed throughout, laid into insulated grooved panels across the entire floor - a huge upgrade in comfort, and it freed the walls of radiators for a cleaner, more streamlined look.
- The new sage green cabinetry went in, paired with concrete-effect worktops and a full bank of integrated ovens.
- A dedicated utility room was created off the kitchen, tucking the washing machine, dryer and a second sink out of sight so the main space stays calm and clutter-free.
There's always a satisfying moment in a project like this when the kitchen is functional but the floors are still bare screed, you can see exactly where it's heading, even if it's a bit drafty!

A Space Built for Gathering
The finished kitchen is everything the clients hoped for and a world away from where it started.
Wood-effect porcelain plank flooring now runs seamlessly through the whole space, warm underfoot thanks to the underfloor heating and a subtle nod to the character of the original room. The soft sage green units feel fresh but not clinical, grounded by the concrete-look worktops and warmed up with brass-toned vintage pendant lights and a wonderful station clock on the wall.
At the centre of it all is the island and it's a proper one. Long enough to seat a full row of leather-topped stools, it's become exactly the social hub the clients were missing. Breakfast, homework, a glass of wine while someone cooks: everything now happens around this island.
Beyond it, the extension earns its keep every single day. The sliding glass doors dissolve the boundary between kitchen and garden, the roof lanterns keep the space bright even on grey Yorkshire days, and there's now room for a cosy seating area within the same open space so the cook is never cut off from the conversation.
